What is the MAME ROW?MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!Notes:.We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post. There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW!
You can play it on any platform you want.Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous rounds topics (link below).Every Monday we create a topic at the 'General Discussion and Gaming MAME Random Of the Week' forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result. These 'rules' are constantly being improved! I thought this was quite interesting (from Wikipedia):The arcade version of Bubble Bobble was widely bootlegged in its day, but due to a security chip installed by Taito (known as the PS4, based on a Motorola 6800) none of the bootlegs played exactly like the original. Through a technique called 'decapping', the MAMEDEV team has been able to reverse engineer the workings of the chip and emulate it perfectly.I'd never heard of 'decapping' but apparently it involves slicing the top of the CPU off and visually inspecting the circuits of the chip using a microscope to see how it works.
That's hacking dedication for you! Said in:I thought this was quite interesting. Apparently it involves slicing the top of the CPU off and visually inspecting the circuits of the chip using a microscopeThat blows my mind. It almost sounds like something that shouldn't even work. I've been reading some of the different MAMEDEV postings around the net about their general dislike of people using older versions of MAME, like those found in RetroArch. Playing devil's advocate, I can somewhat understand their perspective when they've gone through such great lengths to improve the software over time like they've done here. Very interesting.

Just noticed that when I start Bubble Bobble in 2003+ it crashes back to ES and doesn't load the game. The rom works fine in regular lr-mame2003. I am running this on an rpi3b with retropie 4.4 and the rom is from a tested.78 set (not verified for 2003+)This could be a rom version issue but since Bubble Bobble worked just fine under 2003, I am assuming that it hasn't been changed for some reason in 2003+? If it has, just let me know and I'll get the correct rom version for it and will close this issue.Just in case that's not it, thought I'd post here about it. I did not check the log yet.
I think you're only missing one ROM and should be set. If you add this file to your archive I believe it will work with either version as long as you don't run it through a ROM management program and remove the 2003 unneeded ROMs.
I also noticed some 'strange' processing behavior with ClrMamePro and the lr-fbalpha DAT. Mainly BIOS merge information. Some games aren't being processed correctly depending on how 'interpret' the DAT merge information. I wrote the ClrMamePro developer and he acknowledged it was worth a look. He said he would rethink the merge element and make it more restrictive potentially.
0.78 is a good base as it's contains roughly 4720 games that are identical. There's 133 new games that are exclusive to Plus and 39 games that have been updated. Bubble Bobble happens to be one of the 39 updated games!;)When I created a set I used the newest MAME (currently 0.198) as my rebuild source so I am not sure if there's an older set that will have a majority of the updates and additions or if they are scattered through out the sets.
